IX.1.7 Pompeii. House of Paccius Alexander.
Excavated 1853, 1856 and 1866. (Strada Stabiana 78).
According to Fiorelli,
“the house that followed had a long entrance corridor, at the end of which was the latrine: then followed the spacious corridor, with the stairs to the upper floor, leading into the atrium with, to the right, the lararium on its wall, and a recess for a wooden cupboard. On the left was the triclinium, beautifully decorated with a painting that showed a sitting Vulcan, with the shield of Achilles on his legs supported by one of his cyclops, in the act of showing it to Thetis, who sees her image reflected. A companion of the goddess, seated behind her, looks at it carefully, another follower of the god works on the helmet, and on the floor already made, was the body-armour and greaves.
Other than the mentioned painting, also seen on the walls were, a bust of Silenus crowned with ivy, with thyrsus and the cup, and above the head of a bacchante now almost vanished. A bust of Hercules, bearded and with a crown of ivy, with the club and lion skin, having Omphale at his side; Psyche in deer chariot, driven by a Cupid on foot, and followed by another Psyche; two winged Victories, one with trophy on its shoulder, the other holding the rudder, and in the upper architecture were two figurines that were preparing food for two peacocks.
In front of the triclinium was the garden, having its main entrance from the atrium, at the rear of which were two cubicula, one of which contained the stairs to climb to the kitchen with a cupboard below, there was also a narrow tablinum, adorned with the painting of a dove with its beak in a jewel coffer, near to which was another necklace.”

According to Boyce –
there was a heavy masonry ledge above the panel painted to represent a block of red and yellow variegated marble, bordered in red.
It was supported by twin scrolls and ornamented with several bands of stucco relief.
On the masonry ledge were the bases of four delicate half-columns, two on each side of an arched niche.
A heavy gable roof used to project from the wall.
Within the niche a polychrome stucco cornice runs around the middle of the walls, dividing them into sections, the upper one painted red, the lower one painted blue.
On the blue background of the lower section are human figures in stucco relief – now poorly preserved.
The arched ceiling is fitted with a shell of stucco. Around the curve of the arch on the wall outside runs another stucco cornice.

Warscher wrote –
“A. Mau mentioned a representation of a vase/pot hanging in the niche.
The vase has vanished; however its place can be seen as the ribbon of the bow which supported it, has been preserved.”
